Short-term synaptic dynamics promote phase maintenance in multi-phasic rhythms

چکیده
We show that in an inhibitory rhythmic network synaptic depression promotes phase constancy. As cycle period increases, the synapse recovers from depression and becomes more e0ective in delaying the postsynaptic cell. As a result, the delay between the preand postsynaptic bursts increases as cycle period increases. We discuss the dependence of the bursting phase of the postsynaptic cell on the strength and kinetics of the depressing synapse. c © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Maintaining phase of the crustacean tri-phasic pyloric rhythm.
We construct and analyze a model network of the pyloric rhythm of the crustacean stomatogastric ganglion consisting of an oscillator neuron that inhibits two reciprocally inhibitory follower neurons. We derive analytic expressions that determine the phase of firing of the follower neurons with respect to the oscillator. An important aspect of the model is the inclusion of synapses that exhibit ...
متن کاملInterneuron diversity series: inhibitory interneurons and network oscillations in vitro.
In vitro models of rhythms of cognitive relevance, such as gamma (30-80 Hz) and theta (5-12 Hz) rhythms in the hippocampus, demonstrate an absolute requirement for phasic inhibitory synaptic transmission. Such rhythms can occur transiently, of approximately 1 s duration, or persistently, lasting for many hours. In the latter case, stable patterns of interneuron output, and their postsynaptic co...
متن کاملAspirin changes short term synaptic plasticity in CA1 area of the rat hippocampus
Introduction: The prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a cyclooxygenase (COX) product, play critical roles in the synaptic plasticity. Therefore, long term use of COX inhibitors may impair the synaptic plasticity. Considering the wide clinical administration of aspirin and its unknown effects on information processing in the brain, the effect of aspirin and sodium salicylate on the short term synaptic p...
متن کاملThe role of tonic and phasic dopamine for long-term synaptic plasticity in the prefrontal cortex: a computational model.
This work presents a computational model of dopamine (DA) influence on long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) in the prefrontal cortex. Distinct properties of the model are a DA-concentration-dependent switch from depression to potentiation during induction of plasticity, and an inverted-U-shaped dependence of protein synthesis on the level of background DA. Protein synthes...
متن کاملPhasic and long-term depression in brainstem nucleus tractus solitarius neurons: differing roles of AMPA receptor desensitization.
One important question concerning the homeostatic regulation of many physiological processes is whether the control mechanisms are purely reflexogenic or whether they may involve neural adaptation in the form of learning and memory in the brainstem. Using a brainstem slice preparation in the rat, we studied the modifiability of neural transmission in the first-order synapses of the medial and c...
